20 Apr Quilts of Valor
What a month we have had!
- At our April meeting, QOV was given a donation of $1,000 presented by Simonne McElhiney, Commandant of our league, on behalf of the local non-profit Marine organization (photo below).
- On March 24, Pam and I presented to a Marine and then went to Vet Court and presented to a vet with 20 years of service. We also got to visit with some of the mentors and the judge, so it was great.
- On April 4, Pam and I presented to a 97-year-old WWII vet. His daughter requested the quilt and made all the necessary arrangements. He was amazing, very active even though he has mild macular degeneration. He was thrilled with his quilt but more so with the recognition. This group is at the College Grove Senior Center, and they make numerous trips to places of interest. According to the lady in charge, he always goes on the trips with them, and it is like traveling with a history lesson. He knows all kinds of things about Williamson County.
- Then on April 12, I presented to two Joshua Chamberlain Society members. One was to the wife of the wounded warrior who is also a veteran. Her husband was a helicopter pilot who had made four trips to Iraq and two to Afghanistan. Both were captains in the Army. They were delightful. Several of the other vets that I had presented to were there, so I got to visit with them too. This organization works with wounded veterans, and it is very humbling to talk with the vets about their experiences.
Thank you to all of you who work so diligently on quilts and pillowcases. The veterans are all so appreciative. We have made lots of veterans feel special and it is all because of you.
