Quilts of Valor

What a month this has been! I am so proud of our group. You may not know that we have 30 CVQA Quilts of Valor committee members plus eight more that make stuff but don’t belong to the guild. They have long distances to drive, daytime jobs, and lives that are full. One of these is Luci. Her sister Joanne was visiting from Texas, and they wanted some quilts to practice on while Joanne was visiting, so I went to the center to collect quilts for them and Amanda Picard was there with five she had completed. I’ve already gotten back nine quilted tops from Joanne and will trim them and set them out for binding and labeling at our guild meetings.

So far this year we have presented 72 quilts with nine more already scheduled. Everyone involved should be proud of themselves for honoring our veterans’ service to our country. Here is a summary of our recent presentations:

  • On August 29, I presented a quilt to an Army helicopter pilot and certainly made his day!
  • At Vet Court I presented to four veterans.
  • I did a presentation at my high school’s graduation for an Air Force nurse. She was thrilled and the quilt was beautiful. Her daughter told me she was so shocked as it was the first time her service has been acknowledged.
  • We presented to a Marine at Vet Court. I made the top and Pam Delong quilted it because he was so proud of being a Marine. His mentor helped me wrap him in his quilt since Pam was on vacation.
  • Then I had a presentation at Vietnam Veterans of America for an Army veteran who was so surprised. Jan Edleson and Cindy wrapped him and of course all of us got hugs and thanks.
  • Pam presented a quilt to an Honor Flight veteran at Fort Wayne airport. Her brother had arranged it all.

In addition to all this, I received a package from Kathy Kuryla. She had completed a quilt and since there is not an active QOV group where she lives, she sent it to us. I will share it at show and tell at our October meeting.

Please remember that Vet Fest is October 3rd at Granny White Park in Bentwood. We will have a QOV booth there – come visit with us!
