19 May Community Care Committee

The Community Care Committee has had another successful month! At the May meeting we received 13 finished quilts, numerous pillowcases and totes, and an entire flock of Owl Buddies. And wasn’t our May meeting wonderful? Our speakers from Love on Wheels, Tennessee Kids Belong, and Bridges of Williamson County delivered great presentations on their organizations AND what our contributions mean to the recipients. There is no doubt your efforts and time are being cherished by the recipients in our community. WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

This month we delivered 50 quilts to Tennessee Kids Belong for two video shoots coming up in June. Yes, you read that right: 50 quilts! (I had been saving quilts for them). Pictured is Sarah with the quilts. They also will be receiving a flock of Owl Buddies, but I didn’t have room in my car to deliver them along with the quilts. They always tell me we are such a blessing to their organization and the children they serve.

Also this month, we delivered a beautiful quilt to Davis House Child Advocacy Center. The Center investigates child abuse reports (working with the D.A. and sheriff) and provides counseling to children and families. They have an upcoming fundraiser, which will include our quilt. I don’t know who made the top, but it was beautifully quilted by Michelle Braisted. When Kylee (with Davis House) opened up the quilt she said “Oh my, it’s pinwheels! Pinwheels are the symbol for the prevention of child abuse.” We could not get over the fact that this quilt was meant for them. Pictured is Kylee and a friend with the quilt. Davis House has moved to the end of Southeast Parkway, right next to Mercy Clinics. While I was there, Kylee showed me their new sensory room. Studies have shown that children that have experienced trauma and abuse are on a spectrum, like autistic children. The sensory room has subdued lighting and creative sensory “toys” and things to do.

Finally, thank you to everyone for the beautiful plaque and presentation given to me last month for my work with CCC. And special thanks to Joyce Oberle for my quilt. Your participation in our committee makes the “work” very easy!

Our workdays are the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at the Bethesda Senior Center. Our next workdays are May 28, June 11, and June 25. We start at 9 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Bring your lunch!
