Quilts of Valor

Sometimes we are burning the candle at both ends, and that is the case for the QOV committee! This is a combination report for both November and December:

  • In November, we had a presentation for a group of veterans identified by the Spring Hill DAR group, and it was amazing!
  • On November 17, Sandy Cole and Pam DeLong did a presentation at a nursing home for seven veterans.
  • We had a presentation at Vet Court that Pam did because I was at a retreat. (I learned a lot and had a good time, but it sure put me behind!) I have another presentation at Vet Court on the 15th of December.
  • I also had a presentation at the Vietnam Veterans Christmas party. I presented a quilt to a VVA member and one to our guest speaker, Rudy Kalis. Rudy gave a very inspirational talk, and it was good to see him again. After I finished, Rich Kresja, our president, presented me with a donation of $2,000 for our QOV work. I have mailed it to the treasurer and will be ordering more backing and batting in January.
  • Simonne McIlhiney has been busy, too! She presented four quilts for the committee.
  • Pam and Sandy did more presentations at the nursing home.
  • I set up one of our members to present to a veteran at her church. The presentation will be done after a Sunday service.
  • Kathleen Hardin presented 27 quilts to veterans at the recreation camp she belongs to.
  • Jan Edleson has presented to veterans as a part of their DAR pinning ceremonies.

Our long-arm quilters have been busy making binding opportunities for those of you who love to bind. At our November meeting, members took all the quilting projects and all but two kits. They turned in 13 completed tops, and Pam has put batting and backing with them. There is always something to get involved in and help make great memories for our veterans.

In case you haven’t figured it out, whenever a presentation is done or planned, word spreads and before you know it our work increases. If you are looking for something to help keep you on your toes, just let us know – or better yet, come join the QOV committee! We have something for everybody: piecing tops, quilting, binding, or presenting. It’s your choice!

Following the guidelines set by the Quilts of Valor Foundation, the QOV Committee presents quilts to veterans of virtually every military organization at the request of family and friends. In addition to the quilt, the committee provides a certificate, care instructions, and a pillowcase to transport the quilt home.
