Community Care Committee

Even though we haven’t had in-person meetings for two months, CCC has received/finished up six quilts – and I’m sure I will be taking away a carload of quilts at our November meeting! We are in need of ladies’ quilts for the domestic violence center (Bridges of Williamson County) Christmas party for women that have completed their program. I have about nine quilts and will need about 20 or more. So, if you have an extra quilt or two lying around, please bring it to the November or December meeting.

This month we donated four quilts, 20 walker caddies, and two wheelchair buddies to Claiborne & Hughes Nursing facility. HOWEVER, the facility has been bought and is under new ownership. It now has a new name: Mulberry Health & Rehabilitation. The receptionist, Sue, who I have enjoyed talking with for many years, is very encouraged with the new ownership. Let’s hope the change will be for the better for both the patients and the employees.

We also donated 16 pillowcases, eight owls, and three tote bags to Love on Wheels. Alison, their volunteer coordinator, was thrilled with the items, as they are putting together a big order of suitcases/duffle bags filled with essentials for kids entering foster care for several counties. She said they have given out 2,200 suitcases this year, and are working on a large order of 150 duffle bags. She went on to tell me that Governor Lee has expanded independent living for foster care kids and those just leaving foster care from the ages of 18-21 to ages of 16-23. These kids must be attending school full-time (high school, college, or vocational school), or working full-time, or a combination of both. Statistics show that most kids that leave foster care and have no family end up on the streets. It’s encouraging that the state is trying to get these kids a place to live to get started being on their own. Love on Wheels helps out these kids with basics as well.

Our work days are usually the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at the Bethesda Senior Center. Since the fourth Thursday in November is Thanksgiving Day, we will have our work days the 1st and 2nd Thursdays of November: November 6 & 13. We start at 9 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Bring your lunch!
